Nuclear fission

Book ·
OSTI ID:4359815

The object of the book is to provide a comprehensive account of present understanding of nuclear fission. While it is written at an introductory level for students of the physics and chemistry of fission, it also attempts to cover recent developments at a sufficient depth to make the volume valuable to research scientists. The theoretical framework is developed in a systematic way and discussed in terms of the most recent experimental observations. The scope of the book is indicated well by its chapter tities: Introduction, The fission barrier, Spontaneous fission, Fission widths from neutron resonance studies, Properties of low-lying levels of transition nuclei determined from reaction studies, Fission-fragment angular distributions at moderate to high excitation energies, Competition between fission and neutron emission. Fission barrier heights, Motion from saddle to scission: theories of mass and energy distributions, Kinetic energy release in fission, Distribution of mass and charge in fission, Prompt neutrons from fission, Gamma rays from primary fission products, and Ternary Fission. (222 figures, 41 tables, 626 references) (RWR)
