EMP directory for shelter design

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4359546
General historical and educational material about EMP are presented. The material is oriented toward the design of a shelter for civil defense. It is broad in its treatment and outlines the worst case viewpoint, including threat assumptions, EMP energy collectors (such as cables, piping, conduit, antennas, towers, wires, exposed metallic sheets, and structural members), component degradation (minimum energy for burnout viewpoint) and a discussion of isolation requirements. Hardening approaches for shelters include shielding, and the problems of penetrations, quality control and maintenance. Much descriptive and qualitative information is presented. (auth)
