Collisional excitation by free electrons, of transitions in various ions of the type 2s/sup 2/2p/sub q/ - 2s2p/sup q+1/, determines the strength of many semi-forbidden lines observed in quasars. Collision strengths for the transitions N/sup +/ and O/sup 2+/ 2s/sup 2/2p/sup 2/ /sup 3/P-2s2p/sup 3/ / sup 5/S/sup 0/, and N/sup 2+/ 2s/sup 2/2p /sup 2/P/sup 0/2s2p/sup 2/ /sup 4/P are calculated from solutions of coupled integro-differential equations. In all cases allowance is made for configuration interaction between 2s/sup 2/2p/sub q/ and 2p/sup q+1/, and all 2s2p/sup q+1/ ch annels are included. (auth)
