A new type of muonic X-ray spectroscopy with use of polarized muons and polarized nuclear targets is proposed in order to determine precisely the magnetic hyperfine coupling constants in muonic atoms. The principle and formalism underlying the proposed experiments are presented together with numerical calculations for the case of the muonic /sup 209/Bi atom. It is shown that the selective population of the sublevels designated by F of hf multiplets of J = l -1/2 does not depend on the hyperfine interactions during the preceding muonic cascades which may depolarize the muon spin. Strong polarization effects on the line profile of the 2p/sub 1/2/ yields 1s/sub 1/2/ transition are expected resulting from (a) the selec tive population of one F-state of the 2p/ sub 1/2/ level and (b) the residual orientation of the hf multiplet. These effects can be used to determine the coupling constants much more precisely than in unpolarized cases. (auth)
