The intensity of the hard component in the stratosphere was measured during the determination of the cross section for the inelastic interaction of cosmic ray particles with carbon and hydrogen nuclei. The measurements permitted the determination of the flux of the primary particles at the atmosphere boundary. Description are given of the instruments used for the measurements of the inelastic interaction and of the results obtained in measuring the intensity of the hard component; however, the results of the cross section measurements will be published later. The absorption range of the charged particles of the shower forming component in the stratosphere at the 31 deg N latitude was found to be 150 to 170 g/cm/sup 2/. (R.V.J.)
