Salomon Brothers has recently published the 25-page Survey and analysis of 1997 worldwide oil and gas exploration and production expenditures. This 15th annual survey of 228 oil and gas companies, the most comprehensive ever, indicates 1997 will bring an E and P spending increase of 14.7% over 1996 expenditures--the strongest year-ahead outlook in nine years. In addition, the survey indicates that spending in 1996 represented a 15.2% increase over 1995 levels. This summary article presents four of the 41 tables detailing results of spending returns and related survey questions in the published 25-page report. These four tables give survey results for: (1) International (outside North America); (2) US independents; (3) Canada; and (4) US majors. Principal conclusions from data presented in these tables are discussed here.
