The average energy to produce an ion pair, the W-value, in liquid xenon irradiated with alpha -particles emitted from /sup 210/Po is evaluated from the ratio of electron pulse heights in liquid xenon to those in argon, assuming that the Jaffe's columnar theory of ionization is valid. The W-value in liquid xenon is found to be 17.3 eV, which is lower than that in the gaseous phase. Also, the ratio of the recombination coefficient for electrons and xenon ions to the diffusion coefflcient in liquid xenon and the ratio of the recombination coefficient for electrons and argon ions to the mobility of electrons in liquid argon are estimated to be 2.7 x 10/sup 6/ cm and 4.8 x l0/sup -8/ V cm, respectively.
