The Horizon{reg_sign} valve-regulated lead acid battery -- Reengineering the lead acid battery
- Electrosource, Inc., Austin, TX (United States)
In many densely populated cities of the world, one hundred years` proliferation of the internal combustion engine has created intolerable air quality problems. In the US, (and many other industrialized centers world wide) the call for clean propulsion has renewed the challenge to develop renewable, high-efficiency, high-performance energy-storage devices. This paper reviews progress on one advanced energy storage project launched in Austin, Texas in 1980 and now entering its commercial phase. Based on the 136 year old lead acid electrochemistry, and a globally deployed recycling capability, the project challenged every traditional design and manufacturing premise in its pursuit of increased performance from this venerable technology. The Horizon{reg_sign} Valve Regulated lead Acid Battery is the only lead acid battery classified as an advanced battery. The paper summarizes the principal technical and design breakthroughs underlying successful development of Horizon{reg_sign}, which today is the most affordable, highest performing rechargeable battery in commercial production.
