Vertical poison tubes in a reactor are used for control and emergency shutdown. For control, the tubes contain a poison gas, whose pressure is adjusted as required. At the bottom of the tubes, and below the level of the reactor core is a poison solution, which can be forced up into the tubes (preferably through the action of gravity) by the opening of a valve actuated by an emergency signal.
