THERMAL CONTACT CONDUCTANCE
Thermal contact conductance literature is reviewed with particular concern about those data that could apply to reactor fuel elements. Contact conductance values for a number of metal couples are plotted as a function of pressure on the joint so that comparison between the results of the various experiments can be made in consistent units. The use of formulas relating contact conductance to pressure on the joint, hardness of the metais, number of points in actual metallic contact, and the average radius of these contact points is discussed. An observed dependence of thermal contact coefficient on direction of beat flow through joints between dissimilar metals is reported. A theory explaining this effect is proposed. (auth)
