Energy loss measurements of low energy ions in thin carbon foils

Journal Article · · Physics Letters. A

The energy losses in thin carbon foils of ions of N, Ne, Ar, Mn, Kr, and Xe were measured at 100 keV and 200 keV using a highresolution magnetic spectrometer, with a view to improving the accuracy of beam-foil lifetime measurements. For high-Z particles, the results show that a straightforward application of the Linhard- Scharff-- Schiott total stopping cross-sections to beam-velocity correction can substantially overestimate the reduction in velocity due to the foil.
