Effects of surface coatings on the plastic deformation of metal single crystals. Final report, 15 May 1965--30 November 1972

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4354598

The rupture of anodically formed coatings on 2024-T4 aluminum undergoing corrosion fatigue was monitored using electrode potential techniques. The influence upon the fatigue life of films formed at high and low current densities was gaged by the period required for the initiation of cracks in the coating as well as the total numbers of cycles to failure. An improvement in fatigue life was noted in specimens anodized in a slightly acidic electrolyte which produced strongly compressive coatings. However, the period between crack initiation and failure was longest with coatings formed in basic electrolytes. These coatings had much lower residual compressive stresses. (auth)
