THE PENETRATING COMPONENT OF EXTENSIVE COSMIC RAY SHOWERS IN THE ATMOSPHERE

The spatial distribution of mu mesons arising from extensive air showers initiated by primary particles of various energies is investigated. It was found that within experimental errors the spatial distribution function for mu mesons did not depend on the energy of the primary particle. The number of mu mesons produced varied with the energy of the primary particle in such a way as to confirm the supposition, advanced previously, that the manner in which energy is distributed among the secondary particles in an elementary nuclear interaction changes at an energy of about 10/sup 15/ ev.
