The chemical exchange reaction between carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2) and carbamate of di-n-butylamine (R/sub 2/NCOOO plus or minus HR/sub 2/) in triethylamine as a solvent results in a concentration of /sup 13/C in the liquid phases and /sup 18/O in the gas phase. A solvent carrier system with thermal reflux has been investigated and the results are summarized. Based on these studies, a six section cascade was designed for the preparation of high concentrations of /sup 13/C. The cascade was successfully operated for 240 days to study various startup procedures and other characteristics. During the first 141 days, concentration of /sup 13/C reached a value of 66.9% /sup 13/C. Measurements of single stage separation factors ( alpha ) for different aminecarbamate systems by batch and multistage techniques is being continued. Preliminary results indicate that alpha is nearer 1.006 than 1.01 assumed previously. Correlations are being made between the effectiveness of amines for the separation of /sup 13/C and their structure, reaction rates and thermodynamic properties as well as the physical characteristics of their solutions.
