Excitation functions for the /sup 56/Fe( alpha , gamma /sub o/)/sup 60/ Ni and /sup 5 6/Fe( alpha , gamma /sub 1/)/sup 60/Ni reactions were measured at 90 deg to the beam direction over the bombarding energy range 8.0 to 17.6 MeV. Gamma-ray angular distributions were measured at ten bombarding energies. Excitation functions for the /sup 59/Co(p, gamma /sub o/)/sup 60/Ni and /sup 59/ Co(p, gg/sub 1/)/sup 60/Ni reactions were measured over the range E/sub x/ = 16.58 to 16.92 MeV and compared with the ( alpha , gamma ) data. The angular distribution data indicate that the ( alpha , gamma /sub o/) and ( alpha , gamma / sub 1/) reactions proceed throug h 1-. and 1/sup -/ and 3/sup -/ states, respectively. The ( alpha , gamma ) excitation functions are discussed with respect to isospin splitting of the /sup 60/Ni giant dipole resonance. The fine structure observed in the excitation functions is shown to be most probably due to Ericson fluctuations. The gross ( alpha , gamma ) cross sections are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the results of calculations made using the theory of Hauser and Feshbach assuming excitation of the giant dipole resonance.
