Room-temperature-curable epoxy for advanced fiber composites

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4351209

A room-temperature-curable epoxy system, a pure bis-phenol A resin cured with a polyether triamine, was investigated for filament winding of advanced fiber composites. This system was used in two production operations and its handling characteristics are satisfactory. The system can be cured either at room temperature or at moderate temperatures (up to 70 deg C) to give wellbalanced properties. Neither delamination nor fiber microbuckling of advanced composites parts using this resin system was experienced. The typical properties are: in tension, 73 MPa (10,800 psi) failure stress, 3240 MPa (470 ksi) modulus, and 4.6% failure strain; in compression, 88 MPa (12,700 psi) yield stress, 3490 MPa (505 ksi) modulus, and 3.7% yield strain; and in shear, 62 MPa (8930 psi) failure stress, and 12.7 MPa (184 ksi) modulus.
