Supplemental to WAPD-SC-541. A study was made of the anmount of reaction which would occur boetween Zr and water, or steam, should the Pressurized Water Reactor core become uncovered while the Zr alloy heats in the core structure, and also of the amount of reaction after the Zr has melted and drips into water. The distribution of the solid and gaseous products of the reaction and the distribution of energy between these products are described. Conclusions are presented which are based on experiments and theory. The literature on reactions of reactive metals with water is consistent with the estimates presented. 39 references. (C.H.)
