INVESTIGATION OF FOUR RESONANCES IN THE REACTION Si$sup 29$(p,$gamma$)P$sup 3$$sup 0$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Thin Si/sup 29/ targets have been bombarded with protons from a Cockcroft-Walton generator in the energy region E/sub p/ = 0.2 to 0.8 Mev. The gamma radiation from the Si/sup 29/(p, gamma )P/sup 30/ reaction has been investigated with a NaI scintillation spectrometer at the 326-, 414-, 693-, and 729-kev resonances. Pulse spectra taken at each resonance at angles of B plus or minus 0 and theta = 90 degrees to the proton beam were analyzed with a 70- channel Hutchinson-Scarrott kicksorter. The decay of the resonance levels was further investigated by gamma - gamma coincidence measurements. The following spins, J, parities, and isobaric spins, T, could be assigned to P/sup 30/ levels: Ground state, J = 1/sup +/, T = 0; 0.684 Mev, J = 0/sup +/, T = 1; 0.706 Mev, J = 1/sup +/, T = 0; 1.45 Mev, J = (2/sup +/), T = 0; 2.94 Mev, J = 2/sup +/, T = 1; 4.18 Mev, J = 2/sup +/, T = 1; 5.88 Mev, J = 2/sup -/, T = 1; 5.96 Mev, J = 1/sup -/, T = 0;6.23 Mev, J = 1/sup -/, T = 1; 6.27 Mev, J = 3/sup -/, T = 0. The reaction Q value is measured as Q plus or minus 5.570 plus or minus 0.080 Mev. From absolute gamma-ray yield measurements, the radiation widths of all resonance levels could be determined. These levels are shown to have T as a good quantum number. The strong gamma rays are of E1 character and satisfy the isobaricspin selection rule for self-conjugate nuclei. (auth)
