Thirty-five-day periodicity in Her X-1

Journal Article · · Nature (London) Phys. Sci., v. 246, no. 154, pp. 87-89
It is stated that the binary neutron star x-ray source Her X-1 shows a variety of complex phenomena, among which is a series of extended low periods during which the source is not seen, lasting about 24 days and repeating with a period of 35 days. An explanation of this behavior is offered in terms of eclipses produced by a precessing ring at the rim of an accretion disk surrounding the neutron star. Because the disk is expanding the model suggested predicts a steady decrease in the 35 day period, which may be the case, accounting to about 5% in a year. (UK)
