RESUME OF URANIUM OXIDE--II

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4347739
WAPD. Investigations were continued on the powder preparation, sintering, and fuel element fabrication of UO/sub 2/. The stability of UO/sub 2/ compacts in high-temperature water and the reaction of UO/sub 2/ slugs to thermal shock were studied. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that UO/sub 2/ is characterized by a sharp antiferromagnetic transition at --4 deg K. Thermal cycling effects, diffusion of fission products in, and reaction kinetics of UO/ sub 2/ were also studied. Procedures are presented for the determination of U/ sup 4+/ and total U in solution. NBS. The effects on strength properties and bulk density of UO/sub 2/ samples, at various temperatures, of crystallite size and distribution, grain size and growth, and interstitial material were studied. Armour. The hot press and additive programs were continued. Battelle. Phase equilibria and reaction kinetics of the Zr-- UC/sub 2/ systems were studied. The decomposition of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate yielded three polymorphic modifications of UO/sub 2/ and two oxide hydrates. The production of UO/sub 2/ using ceramic methods was investigated. KAPL. The effects of certain impurities on the sinterability of UO/sub 2/ powder were studied. Irradiation studies on UO/ sub 2/ were continued. ORNL. The investigation of UO/sub 2/ included basic studies, fabrication methods, production of various grain sizes, physical property measurements, and radiation effects. Physical properties are tabulated for ThC/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/. (C.W.H.)
