The natural radioactivity in mines for working polymetallic ore veins is discussed. The following indices were investigated: gamma background; radon content in the mine air; uranium and radium content in the mine dust; radon, uranium, and radium in mine waters; and radioactive aerosols. The gamma background in the mine workings varies within the limits of from 3 to 40 R/s. The radium content in the mine waters varies with the limits of 2 x 10/sup -12/ to 8 x 10/sup -12/ g/dm. The concentration of radon in the ore dust varies from 3 x 10/sup -12/ to 6.7 x 10/sup -11/ Ci/dm. A local increase of the radium content in certain mines is due to insufficient ventilation. The radioactive aerosol concentrations are low and do not represent any specific radiation hazard. The radium content in ore dust is 2.8 x 10/sup -11%/ and uranium content 6.3 x 10/ sup -7/ g/g. The silicon content in the dust varies in the limits of from 2.8 to 36.3%. Combinations of a high ore dust value, high silicon content, and certain concentration of radon daughter products have an effect on the miner's health. This should be taken into consideration in examining the professional pathology and hygienic working conditions in the polymetallic nonuranium ores. (INIS)
