A gaseous mixture of hydrogen, hvdrogen chloride, and a chloride of titanium, zirconium, or niobium provides protection for graphite surfaces from hydrogen corrosion at temperatures greater than 1500 deg C. The composition of the mixture is such that the metal chloride and hydrogen react with graphite to form a protective metal carbide layer. (Official Gazette)
