Title: Thermal analysis for insertion of antenna window in the nosetip of an air- to-ground missile

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4346225

Pyrolysis and subsequent formation of a carbonaceous char layer on the phenolic refrasil nosetip of an air-to-ground missile occur routinely during certain required trajectories. In order to adequately flight-test this missile, a nosetip telemetry antenna must be added. However, the conductive char layer is highly attenuating to the electromagnetic radiation. The analyses entailed in the nosetip re-design for insertion of a noncharring antenna window while preserving the original body contour are discussed. Various portions of the analyses deal with convective heating from the boundary layer, conduction into the nosetip, radiation to space, and decomposition of the phenolic refrasil. (auth)
