Alpha capture to the $sup 40$Ca giant quadrupole resonance

It is shown that the /sup 36/Ar( alpha , gamma /sub o/)/sup 40/Ca reaction most proba bly excites a giant quadrupole resonance in addition to the giant dipole resonance. Properties of the giant quadrupole resonance and its effects on (p, gamma ) capture reactions are discussed. (auth)
