Microscopic calculations of liquid and solid neutron star matter

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics. A
As the first step to a microscopic determination of the solidification density of neutron star matter, variational calculations are performed for both liquid and solid phases using a very simple model potential. The potential, containing only the repulsive part of the Reid /sup 1/S/sub o/ interaction, together with Boltzmann statistics defines a homework problem'' which several groups involved in solidification calculations have agreed to solve. The results were to be compared for the purpose of checking calculational techniques. For the solid energy good agreement with Canuto and Chitre was found. Both the liquid and solid energies are much lower than those of Pandharipande. It is shown that for this oversimplified model, neutron star matter will remain solid down to ordinary nuclear matter density.
