The biological and model systems both possess a stereospecific and intramolecular pathway for a suprafacial 1,3-proton transfer across an aza- allylic anion. Both possess a stereospecific pathway for a isotopic exchange reaction (retention of configuration) between the alpha hydrogen of a derivative of an amino acid and the medium. The model differs from the biological system by providing competing stereochemical ard isotope-labeling reaction pathways. (LK)
