INVESTIGATION OF THE BREAKDOWN PRODUCTS OF PARA-AMINOBENZOIC ACID AFTER RADIATION WITH X-RAYS
An investigation was made of the kinetics of the radioinduced breakdown of para-amino-benzoic acid (PABA), the chemical nature of the breakdown products, and the effects of PABA on the radiosensitivity of mice. PABA was found to have no effect on the mortality of xirradiated mice. Chemical tests and study of the spectrum indicate that irradiation in aqueous solution converts PABA to 3-hydroxy- 4- aminobenzoic acid. Ionic yield was observed to be constant above 5 x 10/sup - 5/M and to fall off below this concentration. In connection with this study, attempts were naade to develop superior chemical dosimeters. Results are included from a survey of a number of systems. m-Nitrophenoxyacetic acid was found to be a useful dosimeter. It was found to have high stability and to produce color in direct proportion to the radiation dose without recourse to chemical development. (C.H.)
