Personnel monitoring in diagnostic radiology

A brief attempt is made to clarify the reasons for conflicting data obtained for the ratio of doses received by an unshielded film worn at the collar, to that received by a film placed on the trunk and beneath a lead apron. Attention is drawn to differences in patterns of work for radiologists and radiographers, to variations in the average energy of the radiation and the lead equivalence of the aprons. Data from a small scale trial with radiologists involved in a substantial amount of gastrointestinal fluoroscopic work at kilovoltages in the range 90 to 100 kVp, showed that the ratio of doses outside to inside aprons of 0.35 mm LE at chest level, was 9:1. It is suggested that results indicate that many radiologists are engaged in work of a nature that 100% MPD is likely to be approached more rapidly for unshielded than shielded parts of their bodies.
