Improvements in or relating to electrical superconductors

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4343776
A method is described for manufacturing superconductor wires comprising forming an assembly of two superconductive intermetallic compound constituents, one more reactive than the other, in a nonsuperconducting metal tube. The two constituents are in direct contact with one another, and the second more reactive constituent is in direct contact with the nonsuperconducting metal with which it is capable of forming a solid solution. The assembly is elongated to form a wire and then heat treated. The solid solution formed should have a sufficiently high melting point to prevent any melting on the outer surface of the conductor during the heat treatment. The nonsuperconducting metal may be Cu, or Ni and the more highly reactive constituent may be Sn. The method is described for application to a Cu or Ni tube, the two other constituents being Nb and Sn. (UK)
