Late injuries of the small intestine following radiotherapy for uterine carcinoma

A retrospective analysis of patients operated because of stenosis of the small bowel was performed. Patients with a history of radiation treatment of uterine carcinoma at Radiumhemmet were collected. A minimum approximation of the incidence of obstruction of the small intestine following combined intracavitary and external therapy of carcinoma of the uterine cervix seems to be 0.5%. The characteristics of the radiation therapy, the symptomatology of the complications, the surgical procedure, the findings at histologic examination of the tissue specimens, and the clinical course of the patients are all described. It is concluded that surgical intervention because of a limited, radiation- induced stenosis of the small intestine is compatible with a good prognosis. (auth)
