CAST AGE-HARDENABLE AUSTENITIC STEELS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4342528
Cr--Ni--P, Cr-Mn, and Cr-- Ni--Mn--V types of agehardenable, austenitic steels which have high strength characteristics in wrought forms were investigated for use as high-strength, nonmagnetic steels for castings. A Cr-N-- P austenitic steel with 0.3% C and 0.25% P developed yield strengths at the 100,000 psi level. The Cr--Ma type of austenitic steels containing phosphorus or vanadium were age hardenable. but castings of these alloys were brittle when they were heat treated to high strength levels. Modifying the wrought Cr --Ni --Mn -- V composition resulted in an alloy with good ductility and yield strengths at the 100,000 psi level. A fourth type of age-hardenable, austenitic steel, Mn--V, containing a minimum of alloying elements was developed. The hardness and tensile properties of four compositions which were cast and heat treated to yield strengths at the 100.000 psi level are reported. (auth)
