SYNCHROTRON OSCILLATIONS IN STRONG FOCUSING ACCELERATORS. I. LINEAR THEORY

The equations which describe synchrotron oscillations in strong focusing accelerators are examined, taking into account the relations betwecn the field and the frequency. A general solution is found which describes the oscillations both in the adiabatic and in the critical region and the corresponding integrals of motion are obtained. It is shown that the motion in the critical region can be simply described by means of the effective frequency'' of the oscillations. The effect of fluctuations of the radio frequency, of the accelerating voltage and of the magnetic field is considered, along with the question of the influence of noises on the symchrotron oscillations. The transition through the critical point is studied. The computations are carried to the point of the derived formulas which determine the toleranccs for the corresponding fluctuations. (auth)
