Effect of a plasma on the microwave radiation from a helical beam in a waveguide

The electromagnetic radiation due to the excitation of transverse waves in a helium plasma by a helical electron beam is investigated at frequencies omega ~ omega /sub H/ and omega ~2 omega /sub H/ beam-phasma system confined by a metal waveguide. It is shown that intense high-frequency radiation is observed in the plasma under conditions such that there is no radiation in the vacuum case. An experimental companison is made of the radiation characteristics when a helical beam interacts with the characteristic waves of a vacuum waveguide and with slow electromagnetic waves that propagate in the plasma. A qualitative interpretation of the observed phenomena is given. (auth)
