Thermal Conductivity of Multicomponent Gas Mixtures

Formulas for the calculation of thermal conductivity of multicomponent gas mixtures have previously been derived by Curtiss and Hirschfelder as an extension of the classical Chapman-Cowling approach for binary mixtures. These formulas involve extremely laborious numerical computation involving large determinants with complicated elements. It is shown that a much simpler formula can be derived with the same degree of rigor as the complicated Curtiss- Hirshfelder. It is shown that this simpler formula can be reduced by suitable approximations to the same form as a successful empirical formula.
