Stability of dissipative couette flow when an axial and a transverse magnetic field are present

The stability of dissipative Couette flow in electrically conducting fiuid in the presence of an axial and a transverse magnetic field to axisymmetric disturbances is investigated. Perturbation equations with appropriate boundary conditions are obtained. Equations governing the marginal stability are derived. These equations are reduced under small gap approximations and the corresponding boundary conditions are found both for conducting and nonconducting cylinders. When the cylinders are counter-rotating or co-rotating with greatly differing angular velocities, the characteristic value problem is solved by the orthogonal development program of Chandrasekhar (1961).
