A method is described for the separation of mu g amounts of thorium from large amounts of foreign tons. The separation of the thorium is accomplished by adsorption on a column made of the strongly basic anion exchanger Dowex 1-X8 (nitrate form) from 8M nitric acid solution, whereby the thorium is separated from practically all elements. After the removal of the accompanying elements, the thorium is eluted with 6M hydrochloric acid. the eluate is boiled down and the organic substances that arise from the exchange resin and are contained in the thorium-bearing boiling-down residue are destroyed by means of potassium permanganate. Then the thorium is determined spectrophotometrically by means of the thoronol- or the arzenazo III method. Prior to applying the arsenazo III method, it is essential to destroy the nitrate ions by means of formic acid. The method was employed for determining thorium in the region of approximately 1 to 100 ppm,and in fact for the analysis of Yellow Cake samples (0.8 to 1.5 ppm thorium), minerals containing uranium (0.5 to 15 ppm Th), IAEA- standard specimens and geological standards (0.7 to 100 ppm). A good agreement of the results was obtained both when the Thoronol and also when the Arsenazo III method were employed. (auth)
