Effect of an electric field on absorption spectra during pulse radiolysis of n-heptane and isooctane in the presence of molecular oxygen

Translated from Khim. Vys. Energ.; 7: No. 4. 378-380(1973). Studies of the pulse radiolysis of normal and branched alkanes saturated with oxygen showed that the resulting short-lived absorption spectra represent the superposition of individual Gaussian bands having maxima lambda /sub max/ at 270 mn (I), 252 nrm (II) and 286 nm (III); with increased sensitivity of measurement band IV, was detected with lambda /sub max/312 mn. It was also shown that olefins give bands with lambda /sub max/ 270, 288 and 312 nm, but in the absence of alkanes there is no band with lambda /sub max/ ~ 252 nm. It was demonstrated that only band I belongs to a peroxide radical; the remaining bands, which are absent, like the first, in evacuated samples, are apparently due to oxygen- containing short-lived particles having a different structure. The decay of band I occurs in a second-order reaction, III and IV in first-order processes. (LK)
