REACTIONS OF CARBIDES WITH GASES AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES. PART I. BEHAVIOUR IN OXIDISING ATMOSPHERES

Sintered compacts of the carbides cf titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, vanadium, chromium, and boron were tested for oxidntion resistance in air. Zirconium, niobium, tantalum and vanadium carbides have a high rate of oxidation in air at 800 deg C. Chromium carbide has a very low rate of oxidation at temperatures up to and including 1000 deg C. At 900 and 1000 deg C titanium carbide has a linear oxidation rate which is probably too high for practical applications in oxidizing atmospheres. The oxidation of boron carbide in the range 900 to 1000 deg C is complicated by the volatilization of boric oxide, one of the oxidation products. (auth)
