Twenty-seven year old jack-up converted to a MOPU in 122 days

Conference ·
OSTI ID:433988

The conversion of the 27-year-old jack up MODU Gulftide to a Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU) was accomplished on a very fast-track schedule at a US Gulf Coast shipyard. The reactivation of the long-term stacked rig, its conversion, mobilization to West Africa and installation were accomplished in a period of less than six months during the spring and summer of 1995. This paper outlines the requirements for this type of conversion process, review the permitting, classification, flagging and certification involved, and describes the principal activities and workscope in detail associated with the conversion project, dry-tow mobilization and installation. The general approaches taken to this conversion and the project management techniques applied to it proved highly successful and are suitable for application to a wide range of similar projects.
