The equilibrium electrode potential of thorium relative to its ions was measured in dilute lithium and cesium chlorides as a function of temperature and concentration. It was shown that metallic thorium in an equilibrium mixture of its di- and tetravalent ions is reversible. The values under standard conditions of the electrode potentials Th(II)/Th, Th(IV)/Th, and Th(IV)/Th(II) are related to the radius of the cation of the salt-solvent. Empirical linear equations were found that describe their changes with temperature and cation radius. Upon changing from LiCl to CsCl, the higher valent form is stabilized and the equilibrium reaction constant of reduction of ThCl/sub 4/ to ThCl/sub 2/ decreases. (tr- auth)
