Changes in surface relief of nonirradiated and irradiated BeO on annealing

Specimens of nonirradiated BeO and BeO irradiated with fast neutrons were studied by electron microscopy. The structures of the nonirradiated BeO remains unchanged after annealing at 1400 deg C. In beryllium oxide irradiated at 100 deg C, marked acceleration of surface relief changes during annealing at 1400 deg C were found both at the surfaces of large pores within the crystal and on the crystal's free surface. The probable cause of this phenomenon is the emergence of helium-vacancy complexes at the surface after thermal disruption of these complexes. (JRD)
