The Convention Relating to Civil Liability in the Field of Maritime Carriage of Nuclear Material which was held in Brussels on December 17, 1971 has since been signed by eight states, among them the FRG. Thus the international law on liability for nuclear damage has been extended by another agreement. It is equal to the four hitherto existing conventions (namely the Vienna Convention, the Paris Convention, the Convention supplementary to the Paris Convention, and the Brussels Convention on the liability of operators of nuclear ships) and is in compliance with the system of liability set up in these preceding conventions. Its purpose is to supplement them with regard to the liability for nuclear damages in the field of maritime carriage of nuclear material. (GE)
