3.62-MeV doublet in $sup 41$Ca

gamma spectra were measured in coincidence with particles detected near 0 deg from the /sup 40/Ca(d,p gamma )/sup 41/Ca and /sup 3/He, alpha gamma )/ sup 41/Ca react ions corresponding to an excitation energy of 3.62 MeV in /sup 41/ Ca. The absence of ground-state decays from the 3.62-MeV state when populated by the (d, py) reaction under the experimental conditions of a previous deuteron vector-analyzing power measurememt removes the conflict between the spin assignment of j/sup pi / = 1/2/sup -/ to this state from the analyzing power experiment and previous gamma -ray branching-ratio measurements.
