High-resolution study of the particle-hole multiplets in $sup 208$Bi

Particle-hole multiplets in /sup 208/Bi corresponding to the coupling of the h/sub 9/12/ proton with neutron holes in the p/sub 1/2/, f/sub 5/2/, p/sub 3/ 2/, i/sub 13/2/, f/sub 7/12/, and h/sub 9/12/ shells have bsen observed by the / sup 209/Bi(p,d)/sup 204/Bi reaction at 35 MeV with an over-all resolution of 5 keV in thc deuteron spectra. The results generally show excellent agreement with the weak coupling model except for the h/sub 9/12/ hole states. However the observed h/sub 9/12/ multipl et states do contain a large fraction of the expected strength. There is also substantial agreement with earlier (d, t) work except for some spin assignments and in the location of the 2/sup -/ member of the pi h/sub 9/2/, nu /sup -/i/sub 13/2 multiplet. (auth)
