Pressure dependence of Curie temperature of rare earth--cobalt compounds

Journal Article · · J. Phys., F (London), v. 3, no. 12, pp. 2218-2226

The pressure dependence of the Curie temperature (T/sub c/) was determined up to 40 kbar for the compounds R/sub 2/Co/sub 17/(R = Nd, Gd, Er, Y, and Th), RCo/sub 5/(R = Gd, Y, and Th), R/sub 2/Co/sub 7/(R= Gd and Y), RCo/sub 3/ (Gd, Y, and Pr), and RCo/sub 2/(R = Gd and Tb). Single-phase compounds with off- stoichiometric composition were also included. Data are discussed in terms of the collective electron model. With few exceptions, the pressure derivative of T/ sub c/ of the various compounds can be represerted by a general relation of the form dT/sub c//dP = 5/3kT/sub c/ - 5/6kB/T/sub c/ with B = 3.5 x 10/sup 6/K/sup 2/ an d T/sub c/ ranging from 400 to 1200 deg K. For the compounds Y/sub 2/Co/sub 17/, YCo/sub 5/, YCo/sub YCo/sub 2/, GdCo/sub 5/, ThCo/sub 5/, and Th/sub 2/Co/ sub 17/, the compressibili ty k was determined. (auth)
