The energy supply situation existing today in the V. S. is examined. The natural gas supply is short, but with the utilization of the one remaining abundant energy resource, coal, shortages may be alleviated. A coal gasification plant is proposed to be built in the Four Corners Area of New Mexico and is under design The Lurgi process used to gasify the coal, to be mined in near-by New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, is described. Technical, environmental, and economical aspects of the plant design are presented. (MCW)
