Focussing of radio waves by large scale ionospheric irregularities

Journal Article · · J. Atmos. Terrest. Phys., v. 36, no. 3, pp. 461-473
ABS>A three-dimensional theory of focussing of radio waves by large scale ionospheric irregularities has been developed and has been applied to two cases: the travelling ionospheric wave and the spheroidal irregularity. With realistic models for the ionospheric perturbation the enhancement due to focussing can be of the order of 10 dB at a frequency of 40 MHz. Records of signals received from Explorer 22 have been examined and several examples of this focussing effect are presented. (auth)
