Perimeter blasting with the ANFO-spoon technique
The benefits of controlled blasting techniques have gained increasing recognition by the mining industry in recent years. The utilization of an effective controlled blasting program can result in a safe work environment with less loose rock and a reduced level of scaling and ground support. Controlled blasting techniques may take numerous forms, for example, perimeter control blasting pre-shearing and line shearing. The most widely accepted method for controlling overbreak in underground production and development headings is the perimeter control blasting technique. This method involves the drilling of perimeter holes on a burden-to-spacing ratio of approximately 1.5 to 1 and loading the perimeter holes with light, well-distributed charges. These holes are fired simultaneously after the last delay period in the round. By shooting the perimeter holes in this manner, a shearing action is obtained thereby minimizing the overbreak.
