THE REDUCTION OF URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE TO URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE BY TRICHLOROETHYLENE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4336678
Uranium hexafluoride is only partially reduced by liquid trichloroethylene at room temperature to give intermediate fluorides. The product is finely divided and hydrolyses in moist air. Reduction to the tetrafluoride is completed on boiling with trichloroethylene. A considerable quantity of fluorinated trichloroethylene is absorbed on the product but can be removed by heating to 500 deg C in nitrogen. The solubility of uranium hexafluoride in several inert solvents has been determined.
