The boiler described is provided with a water storage drum connected to the boiler inlet, and provided with a head of water available, in the event of failure of the interna1 water supply, to maintain a temporary water supply in the tubes. A boiler inlet feed pump is arranged to feed water to the boiler and to a circuit containing the water storage drum, this circuit being connected between the feed pump outlet and the outlet from the boiler. An auxiliary pump may be provided for the feed pipe, and also a control valve in the storage drum circuit to enable the storage of a sufficient head of water in the storage drum to ensure that, in the event of failure of the inlet feed pump, a supply of water is temporarily maintained to the boiler via the auxiliary pump, with flow of water from the storage drum occurring when the pressure in the reed pipe falls.
